Fredonia girls claim 3A regional cross country title

RICHMOND — With Jordan Smith and Peyton Wood finishing in the top 10, the Fredonia girls captured the Class 3A regional cross country championship Saturday morning at Central Heights High School.

The top three teams in each regional advance to state competition. The Yellowjackets finished with 85 points on the day to take first place in the girls’ team standings ahead of runner-up Osage City with 96. Also qualifying as a team was Council Grove, which took third place at 103.

Other area teams participating in the meet were Jayhawk Linn, fourth at 106; Southeast-Cherokee, seventh at 140; Caney Valley, ninth at 197; and Erie, 10th at 206.

Members of the state-qualifying Fredonia team included Smith, who finished fifth in 21:34.54; Wood, sixth in 21:49.91; Natalie Hubbard, 17th in 23:50.38; Penner Fox, 28th in 24:46.64; Allison Miller, 40th in 26:42.13; and Clara Hubbard, 62nd in 30:30.66.

In addition to the three state-qualifying teams, other runners that qualified individually for state competition were Wellsville’s Paige McDaniel, who won the regional title in 20:42.68; West Franklin’s Molly Rossman, second in 20:50.96; Jayhawk Linn’s Kathryn Dawson, third in 21:06.28; West Franklin’s Bailey Leach, 21:51.34; Southeast-Cherokee’s Jesse Jenkins, eighth in 21:56.20; Caney Valley’s Cassidy Anderson, ninth in 22:36.77; and West Franklin’s Elizabeth Singer, 10th in 22:40.19.

On the boys’ side, no area team qualified as a team, but there will be runners that qualified individually, including Southeast-Cherokee’s Tanner Craddock, fifth in 18:12.68; Eureka’s Ishonn Shockley, 10th in 18:41.40; Caney Valley’s Trevor Watson, 12th in 18:51.21; Erie’s Severin Mulzer, 13th in 18:52.67; and Caney Valley’s Caleb Sanders, 16th in 19:09.47.

Central Heights won the boys’ regional title with 29 points, followed by runner-up Council Grove at 63 and West Franklin 95. Caney Valley took fourth with 125, while Eureka was seventh at 162, Humboldt ninth at 253, Southeast-Cherokee 10th at 256, Erie 11th at 262 and Jayhawk Linn 12th at 296.

The Class 3A State Cross Country Meet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
